This is one of the best things you’ll hear this year, Dave Grohl’s keynote from SXSW. If music is your religion, Grohl is one of its prophets. The legendary Nirvana drummer, musical polymath founder of Foo Fighters, reminds us “the musician comes first.” You can stream the soundtrack album from Grohl’s new documentary film Sound […]

Permit us to double flail this morning over the news that David Bowie – Happy 66th Birthday!! – is releasing his first album, The Next Day, in a decade. The first single off the album, “Where Are We Now”, is available on iTunes. The video was released over Bowie’s website. He does not disappoint. This […]

We’re HUGE fans of the Institute for the Musical Arts. Situated on a 200-year-old farm atop a hill in Goshen, MA, it’s an idyllic haven where teenaged girls can hone their rock music chops in a laid-back, nurturing environment. They have amazing mentors, starting with IMA’s founders June Millington and Ann Hackler, rock music veterans […]

The Shins have just released their official video for “It’s Only Life” and we’re mesmerized. A child playing in the woods, antlered helmet and all, returns to discover that his once-tidy suburban neighborhood has been laid to waste by shadowy monsters (reminiscent of the blob creature in Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away”). Deliciously disturbing.

By June K. For Mother’s Day, from fierce mama Scarlett Cherry comes this live studio recording of “It’s Only Change” off her album “Labor of Love.” Co-written with Ty Taylor of Vintage Trouble, among others, this song sends chills up the spine with its bittersweet celebration of life’s changes. Perhaps it’s because I’m about to […]

One of our favorite emerging bands over the past couple of years is Vintage Trouble, a soul/rock band out of Los Angeles that has lately been touring Europe to growing acclaim. We had frontman Ty Tayler scheduled for an interview on the Juneau & Xena radio show, but then he got too busy!! Our loss, […]

Scarlett Cherry is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter boasting a voice as sweet and rich as honey, a beauty that is half-earth mother half-Hollywood siren, and sass to spare. Her CD “Labor of Love”, released last year, celebrated her experience of becoming a mother, and broke crowd-funding records on Kickstarter. Enjoy her performance of “Fierce Mama”, […]

Science journalist and singer-songwriter Jascha Hoffman released his latest oeuvre today, “Limited”. The music video created by John Pavlus is a mash-up of classic science fiction movies about the relationship between humans and artificial intelligences. But while the films generally view the relationship from the organic beings’ points of view, here the song inverts the […]

Keeping on top of the latest music trends is like trying to catalog the speciation of Darwin’s finches on the Galapagos Islands. (Yes, we are total science nerds.) I’ve been enjoying Skrillex, cheered his Grammy wins, and was totally into the electro dance party with DeadMau5 last night. At the same time, I’ve been having a hard […]
