From the Berklee School of Music’s community blog comes this great write-up about John Mayer’s recent seminar to students of the famed music school. Mayer (one of Berklee’s noted alumni) devoted a full three hours to a thoughtful discussion about pursuing a career in music. He treated the packed audience to songs from his new album. Among the topics he addressed was the temptation for artists to promote themselves 24/7 over social media. Of course, he spoke from the perspective of a recovered Twitter addict. We believe a disciplined approach to Facebook and Twitter can be invaluable to artists, but agree that one needs to recognize the addictive and illusory nature of the micro dopamine thrills we get every time one of our Tweets gets “validated” by a reply or RT…
